The good, the bad and the embarrassing

stopwatchRandomly, Yung Cal hit me on facebook chat.

To be 100% honest, my mind is all over the place lately, I’m not 100% sure where/how I know Yung Cal.

But he hit me with, simply, this:

http://www.zshare.net/audio/604224219ec596ac/

Now, I am in no position at this time to spin any records, hook up any artists, or even listen and/or respond to, the dozens of pieces of new music that comes across my e-desk on any given day.

But, for whatever reason, I decided to click on it. It’s a zShare link, we’re all pretty familiar with them.

I got a pop-up. I closed the pop-up. There was a link that said “skip this ad”. I sighed, and clicked the link. Then the zShare countdown showed 45 secords before my download would begin.

I almost closed the window. Normally, I would have. Luckily, I’m lethargic tonight. My point?

Well, the point is, of course, that when you have only nano-seconds to keep the interest of today’s lightning-fast-attention-span web surfers, you’ve got to find a way to deliver your link without a delay. The difference between instantly and two-clicks-and-45-seconds will likely be a huge factor in finding a way to get your randomly-thrown-at-people links actually opened.

Use a service with a shorter wait time, or actually pay for the “pro” level. Best, you should have a website, and should be able to directly link to an .mp3 on your server, which will a) be a direct link assuring no-delay, and  b) allow your site name to be better visible.

Oh, and Cal, name your .mp3’s with the artist name and song title, and find out about ID3 tagging so your file is not named just “05 SWEAT AND TEARS”. It’s like the old tip of putting your contact info actually on the CD, in case it gets separated from the case. Say I listened to this in 3 days, and thought it was the best thing ever, I would have no clue who’s song it was.

Anyway, all the best Cal. If I had my headphones here I’d give it a listen, but I’ll let you know what I thought when I do.

Box.net is a great service for file sharing like this. I use it myself for mp3 sharing. Its simple and allows you to track how many times a file is downloaded. Not too expensive either. Overall a much better alternative to the likes of zshare or rapid share.  Check it: http://www.box.net
